6 Creative Ways to Personalize Your Wedding

Your wedding is your day, therefore you can make it unique by personalizing your celebration to fit your personality. From the location you choose, to the wedding theme and wedding games, there are multiple ways to customize your event and make it unique. These are some great ideas to make a statement with your wedding!

  •         Include Meaningful Details

Special details about your life and love story will make your event unique. Is there a song that means a lot to your relationship? Play it! The story of how you met? Share it!

You can get ideas from your passion and hobbies. For example, if you love books, you can have your cake designed as a stack of books; if you love to travel, design your paper goods to look like a passport.

  •         Display Photos

You can include a wall or table or even a slide in the venue where you share photos of you and your partner-or just general pictures. The pictures can be of your family members or even loved ones that have passed.

  •         Personalize Your Menu and Signature Drinks

You can have fun by customizing the cocktails too. Let the bartender prepare a custom drink that has a special meaning to you.

Additionally, your food can be designed around your relationship or your roots and where you’re from. For example, if there is a food you both love to eat or a food significant to your tradition, you could have it served at your wedding reception!

  •         Include Fun Signage

Including signage is an excellent way to add your stamp on the wedding. You can share custom signage about your relationship. There are many ways you can do this: display your favorite quote, customize and add your initials to the favors, write out a part of your vows, personalize the aisle, and more.

  •         Celebrate Your Roots

Celebrate your roots, traditions, and beliefs by showcasing them at your event. For example, if there’s a practice significant to your culture or religion, you can include it in your wedding.

  •         Include Music You Love

Celebrate your day by playing music that you love. It is essential because music, more than anything else, adds life to any celebration!

2 Important Things a Great DJ Excels in Doing

There is more to DJing than just mixing songs or making playlists. It takes more than that to lead your guests through the entire evening smoothly and entertain audiences at weddings and parties. One good quality of a good DJ is not only do they have a wide database of music to choose from but they know which excellent songs to use when detecting the temperament and mood of guests at an event.

A professional DJ is adept at knowing the right place, moment, and mood to play particular songs. The best DJ is one who is creative enough to know his or her audience and the environment they are DJing. So, to be able to find great DJs from the amateurs, we have listed some tips below so you’ll be sure before you secure the services of a DJ for your wedding.

  • Reading the Room

A DJ who knows what they are doing, they can read the room and can play songs that induce particular emotions in the guests. A professional DJ will have years of experience with this, so it’s something he or she can easily do.

  • The Perfect Time to Play the Perfect Songs

A good DJ knows the right time to play certain types of music. The DJ has control and he must make sure he or she exceeds the audience’s expectations. The DJ must know how to read the time and moment to entertain each and everyone at the wedding venue. Exceptional DJs are those that know exactly what to play and when to play it.

If your Chicago wedding is right around the corner and you need a DJ who has perfected the points in this article, Paul Michaels Events would love to talk to you.

We promise to make your wedding a truly fun and memorable celebration. We have the talent, skills, equipment, passion, and drive, and we’ll bring them all to your wedding ceremony and reception!

5 Top Ways to Engage Your Wedding Guests on The Dance Floor

If you are looking for ways to ensure your wedding guests thoroughly engage themselves at your wedding reception, here are a few very simple tricks to try. These are sure to get all your guests to the dance floor as soon as dance music comes through the DJ’s speakers!

  • Have A Spacious Dance Floor

If you want all your wedding guests having a great time on the dance floor, you will need a dance floor that is sized appropriately for your number of guests. They need enough space to show off their dance moves, of course.

Ensure that you put the size of the dance floor into consideration before choosing a wedding venue. Go for one that is spacious enough to accommodate every couple. Your venue will be able to estimate the correct size of the dance floor for your party.

  • Give your DJ the necessary information about your guests

While preparing your wedding playlist with your wedding DJ, we advise you to give the DJ the information they will need about your guests.

For example, inform them of the number of guests you are inviting, and the age range of the guests-how many teenagers, adults, etc. will be attending. This information will help the DJ arrange the playlist in a way that will entertain everyone in attendance.

  • Get Ready to Dance

Some of your guests might not be too eager to dance but you can change that. Lead by example! Once you set a good example for your wedding guests, we believe they’ll follow suit.

The wedding is all about you and your partner, so all eyes will be on you, which means they’ll be ready to follow if you hit the dance floor first.

One of our tips we give every couple is that your guests want to be wherever you are. They are there to celebrate you. If you’re on the dance floor, your guests will be there with you!

  • Play A Lot of Upbeat Dance Songs

Slow songs are great but when it comes to the dance floor at your wedding reception, dance songs work best, for obvious reasons.

When your wedding DJ plays faster songs at your wedding reception, your guests will be more enticed to get on their feet and dance the night away!

  • Get a professional DJ

A professional wedding DJ simply makes everything easier. When you secure the services of such a professional, you won’t have to worry about the entertainment at your wedding reception. A professional DJ knows how to set the mood at your wedding and make certain your guests have a wonderful time.

If you need a professional wedding DJ to help handle the entertainment at your Chicago Wedding, Paul Michaels Events is here to answer your call!

6 Things No One Tells You About Planning Your Wedding

Let’s be honest here:  Planning for a wedding is as exciting as it is overwhelming. If you didn’t know that before getting engaged, you probably do now. Your wedding will be a wonderful day riddled with gaiety and love but planning it can be challenging.  We have found a few tips that most people don’t realize when they are beginning to plan. While they are little things it’s better you know about them now so you’re better prepared. Here are a few things no one tells you about planning a wedding.

  • It’s Hard

Whether you’re throwing a big party or a casual party, it’s hard to organize it. There are so many things and decisions you need to take care off and it may get difficult-especially without the help of a professional. Make sure to find the right vendors who can help make your day run smoothly.

  • Your Wedding Isn’t Your Wedding

Your wedding is your day but someone could easily make it about them. Many people will try to add to your day and end up interfering with your plans, although usually with good intentions. However, these unwanted additions usually don’t turn out as well as the person may hope. Your friends and relatives may contribute solicited (or unsolicited) ideas and opinions which may make  you feel obligated to please everyone to avoid offending them. So, it’s either you take a stand or allow everyone to have a say in your wedding. Neither is easy, we know.

  • Weddings Are Expensive

We encourage you to have a wedding based on your budget, however weddings do cost a lot of money. When doing a wedding on a budget, think about where it is important to spend the money for you . For some people, the food may be the most important thing to spend the money on. For others, it may be the entertainment or decorations. Spend the money where you think it will be most impactful for your day.

  • An Expense Always Pops Up

When planning a wedding, we advise you to set money aside for unforeseen expenses because something that isn’t in your original budget can come up when you least expect it.

  • You May Fight with Your Partner

Believe it or not, this is quite common. You may have different opinions with your partner about how the day will go. You and your partner may need to find a compromise to keep the wedding plans on track. These decisions will make you a stronger couple as you begin to build a healthy marriage!

  • Not Everyone Will Remember Your Wedding

Your wedding may be the center of the universe for you but it’s not the center of everyone else’s. Be mindful of that. Weeks after the wedding is over, don’t be surprised when people even start forgetting about the little details of your event.

What we’re trying to say here is, your wedding can never be as important to your guests as it is to you, so put your happiness first before anyone else’s. Make your wedding as memorable as you can make it for you! Make it a wedding that lives long in your memory and heart.

Creating a fun and memorable wedding is hard but we can make it easier for you. What To Expect From Your Wedding DJ in 2020

A DJ is one of the ingredients that gives a wedding that unique and lovely flavor it needs. They can either make a wedding lively and unforgettable or boring.

When signing an agreement with any vendor, you should know what to consider before you secure their services and sign a contract. This is particularly important for when you hire a professional wedding DJ. Below we have listed some things you should expect from an experienced DJ.

  • Arrival

Your DJ should arrive before the guests-at least 2 hours before the start of the program.  This will give them time to unpack and set up equipment, do some soundcheck, and play background music as the guests arrive. At Paul Michaels Events, we generally have a three hour set-up time for weddings. This makes sure that we are ready with plenty of time and can double check to make sure everything is set up well.

  • Music

A DJ is responsible for playing music and creating a playlist for each special moment at your wedding. However, if you have special songs you would like to hear at your wedding, you should discuss it with your DJ. At Paul Michaels Events, we play a role in helping you organize the event especially with the timeline, however the DJ is not your party planner. Make sure to know what services your DJ offers.

  • Dance Floor Opening

Wedding ceremonies come with different special dances like the first dance, father-daughter dance, wedding party, etc. Your DJ is expected to announce these dance moments and accompany it with a song of your choice. For our couples, we go over all of the introductions ahead of time to make sure we are announcing everyone correctly. You should also expect your DJ to open the dance floor with an upbeat and lively playlist during dance hour.

  • Master of Ceremony

You should know that a professional wedding DJ does a lot more than just play music. Many DJs double as the master of ceremony. Asides playing music, they make announcements such as cutting of the cake, the arrival of the couple, dance time, etc. They occasionally engage with guests too by saying a few words to keep them entertained. We like to play an active role in getting the party started, but once everyone is dancing, we are sure that the couple is the center of attention and not us.

  • Contract

Your DJ should offer a contract when you decide to hire them. This will ensure you are on the same page and all your needs are met. This contract is very important to make sure you and your DJ are on the same page for expectations.

5 Tips to Get the Most from Your Wedding DJ

DJs are professionals who excel at using music to bring fun to any kind of event. They know how to read the crowd and keep them happy and excited. Conversely, because every client is different and has different needs, it is important to have some conversations with your DJ to get the most from them.

  • Your Input Greatly Matters

If you want the DJ to dictate all the songs to be played at your event, there’s no problem with that. Just give them some genres to start from and your DJ can take it from there. However, there’s no harm in creating your own playlist for them. While you shouldn’t try to plan every song that is played, feel free to create a list of your favorites for your DJ to work with.

  • What Kind of Music Do You Like?

Your DJ will be in charge of playing music, right? Well, why not give them a hint on the type of music you like and want? You have the option to add your favorite songs to the DJ’s playlist too. Also, if you prefer some songs or genres over others, discuss with your DJ. Every client is unique and your day should reflect your taste.

  • What Music Do You Not Like?

Your “Do Not Play List” is just as important as your “Must Play” list. Ensure your DJ knows the songs or genres you don’t want to hear at your event. There may be many reasons that songs end up on the “Do Not Play List”, while your DJ doesn’t need to know the reasons, try to think of any song or artist that you (or an important guest) may have a negative reaction to.

  • What’s the Tone of Your Wedding?

Different wedding settings sometimes need different music playlists. For example, a ‘90s themed wedding will definitely require a different playlist from a traditional wedding. Let your DJ know the theme and tone of your wedding to enable him tailor a playlist that aligns with your event.

  • Entertainment Options

There are so many other ways to have fun with music asides just dancing. You could play games like musical chairs, have a dancing competition, or a sing-a-long! If you’ll be playing a game or want something special that requires music, let your DJ know before the day so they can prepare for it.

At Paul Michaels Events, we understand that every client is different and we make it our job to have an in-depth conversation with our clients before the day. This enables us to understand their needs, their taste and tailor a playlist that suits them.

5 Ways to Make the Most of Meeting with Your Wedding Vendors

guests dancing at a wedding

Vendor meetings can be fun as well as stressful, but should be productive. Sometimes, clients and vendors need to go back and forth until they finally arrive on the same page and see the same vision for the wedding.  While email and phone conversations can be effective, one-on-one meetings can be  advantageous as well. Below are some tips to communicate your needs, ideas, and concerns about your wedding to a prospective vendor.

  • Know Your Budget and Priorities

It’s important to have a budget set before you meet any vendor. While browsing the web for vendors, go with those whose prices or packages you can afford or are generally within your price range.

You should also prioritize your budget based on your needs and style. For example, you may prefer  to spend more on food  or entertainment and cut back on flowers.

  • Come Prepared

Before meeting with vendors, make sure you have a list of things you will be discussing with them. Identify the questions you want to ask and the ideas you want to discuss before scheduling a vendor meeting. Also, after you’ve chosen and contracted your vendors, be sure to share every detail of your wedding with them even if it doesn’t directly relate to their services. Tell them what you want and expect so they can help you with your vision. Sharing this level of detail  is very helpful not only to you, but also to them.

  • Be Open to Suggestions

You may already have a clear idea of what you want and need but that doesn’t mean you should reject every suggestion your vendor makes. Listen to them carefully and you may just pick some inspirations or get more ideas from them. Keep in mind, they have done hundreds or thousands of events and generally have an idea of what works and what doesn’t work as well.

  • Bring Your Partner

Your partner’s opinions really matter during vendor meetings. Vendors like DJs always love to meet the couple to determine their style and taste. This will help them personalize their services based on your taste.

  • Beware of Rip-Offs

Before signing the contract, ensure that every detail and specifics are in it. This includes the agreed price, date,  time, services being provided, etc. Check the authenticity of the vendor before working with them by checking online sources and reviews on third party sites like Google, or their facebook business page. See what others are saying about them ahead of time.

At Paul Michaels Events, we love to have  one-on-one meetings (either through video chat, or in-person when it’s possible) with our clients to help us understand their needs and taste. That’s only one out of dozens of reasons why we are Chicago’s premier wedding DJ and entertainers!

Photo both image

A unique and varied line-up of entertainment options will not only excite your guests but also create a fun atmosphere for your event. While the dance floor may be entertainment for some crowds all night long, adding a few extra touches to entertain the guests can be great additions to your wedding. If you’re looking to surprise and entertain your guests, these 5 ideas will do wonders for you.

  • Photo Booth

Taking photos with your friends is always fun. A photo booth is perfect for having a fun time putting on props and posing with your friends, but it also helps create lasting memories of your wedding for you and your guests.  Because we can print out multiple copies, everyone can take a copy home. At Paul Michaels Events, if you use our DJ services, we give you $200 off of the premium photo booth package. The package comes with a backdrop of your choosing, props and a book of all of the photos taken throughout the night for the new couple to take home (so you can see what your friends and family were up to all night!).

  • Food Fiesta

While food can satisfy and incite the taste buds, it can also be a source of fun. Try to be creative with the food options and the menu. You can serve ‘entertaining’ wedding food like cotton candy, sushi, midnight snacks, chocolates and more. You’d be surprised how much your guests will appreciate this twist!

Also, food trucks have gained quite a momentum in wedding receptions. You can be creative with the food styles and options in a way that excites your guests.

  • Games

Games are always a fun activity and you can bring that fun to your event! Lawn games, casino tables, Jenga, space hopper, musical chairs, bingo, bouncing castle etc. Games are an idea that  both kids and adults can enjoy.

  • Fireworks

A popular option for entertainment is to have a spectacular display of fireworks towards the end of the wedding reception. Think of it as the grand finale that ends the ceremony with a bang. Sparklers also work for a similar effect at a smaller scale!

  • Dance and Choreography

Music helps set the mood at a wedding reception and where there is music, there is dancing and fun. You and your new partner might want to have a choreographed dance, or you could bring back something from the bachelor or bachelorette party.

90’s Wedding Ideas That Are Still Awesome!

bridesmaids in denim jackets

Most couples these days are having modern weddings but why not travel back in time and have the ultimate 90s wedding? We’re talking about bright neon colors, 90s music, lots of balloons, and more.

The 90s may be over but you can relive that amazing era. And as we know, styles always come back in fashion through beauty trends, band reunions, fashion trends like strappy heels and dad sneakers. Many of us remember the 90s as such a colorful era. So if bringing a bit of the 90s into your wedding is enticing to you, the few tips listed below can help make it possible.

  • Invitations with 90s Patterns

Let your guests have an idea of what your party is going to be like by sending invites with a strong 90s theme. Choose fonts and patterns, like prisms and geometrical motifs that really bring out the era.

  • A Unique Wedding Dress

To give a 90s vibe, choose a minimalist wedding dress style with 90s details like stylish crop tops and skirts, puffy sleeves, or even a jean jacket!

  • Suspenders

Suspenders were a thing in the 90s and even now, it’s a perfect trend for men. For 90s styles, Grooms and groomsmen can ditch traditional tux for suspenders.

  • Neon

Neon signs were a great trend in the early 90s. Consider having custom neon signs in your venue – around the walls, on tables or on the bride and grooms table. It could say a loving quote or your new Mr. and Mrs. name.

  • Balloon Arch

A wedding venue with a large colorful balloon arch is instantly recognizable as a 90s feature.

  •  Milk and Cookies

Milk and cookies were a favorite back in the 90s and they can still serve as an excellent treat for your guests as a “late night snack”. These could be gourmet cookies from your favorite bakery or your guilty pleasure, like Oreo’s!

  • Fun Games

You can incorporate fun, vintage, and 90s games at your reception. This is an especially great idea if you have children attending your wedding. Ask your entertainment about what games they may be able to lead.

  • Get That 90s Playlist On!

Is it really 90s without 90s music? Pick out your top favorite 90s songs to give to your DJ who will create a great 90s playlist for your event.

For everything entertainment and music, whether you’re going 90s or prefer an elegant modern wedding, Paul Michaels Events will be happy to cover your wedding ceremony!

Michelle and Zach’s Wedding at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel

On September 7th, Michelle and Zach celebrated their matrimony in a night no one will forget. They held the Wedding at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel. DJ Ian and DJ Brian were on hand to provide audio and music for the beautiful ceremony, as well as curate the party during dinner and dancing. We were honored to serve as an integral aspect of the evening through class and fun.

At the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel, the ceremony was held in the Explore Ballroom, a circular room with large windows on every side that overlooks the heart of the city’s downtown along the Chicago River. The panoramic view looking out is only outdone by the view looking up: a fully glass vaulted ceiling, allowing the night lights to envelope the entire space.

Zach’s Aunt, Andrea – an ordained Jewish Cantor, led the ceremony. After reading part of the Ketubah signed by Michelle and Zach, Andrea sang with elegance the traditional seven blessings, while siblings and close family came up to read the blessings.

After the smashing conclusion of the ceremony (“Mazel tov!”) the guests retreated to the Discovery Room for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Around 9:45 they were welcomed back into the Explore Room, newly transformed for dinner. While Michelle and Zach opted for a traditional dinner music backdrop of vocal jazz and classy love songs, Ian snuck in two (appropriately timed) Star Wars songs to Zach’s delight, a famously devout Star Wars fan.

After dinner, desserts, and camaraderie, Zach and Michelle kicked off the dancing portion of the evening around 11:45 with their first dance to “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. Ian and Brian kept the dance floor packed from start to finish through the ebbs and flows of the night, including a rousing rendition of everyone’s favorite, the Hora.

With everyone leaving to head home or to their rooms after 2 AM, everyone was exhausted in the best of ways, but none more happy than our newlyweds.
