5 Tips for Hiring the Right Wedding DJ

5 tips for hiring the right dj

The entertainment on your wedding day is truly what completes the celebration, so it is extremely important that every couple finds the right  entertainment for them. Whether your goal is to have a packed dance floor at the reception or to have couples slow dance the night away, hiring a wedding DJ is an excellent choice!

When hiring a DJ company, you want to make sure that they are professional, willing to customize the music based on your taste and willing to do everything they can to make your wedding day the best it can be. We picked out a few tips that should help you in the search for  the right DJ for your party:

Know Where to Look

The first tip to finding a good DJ is to do your research. When you get a name or recommendation, check out the DJ company’s website, ask questions, and see what others are saying about them on websites like WeddingWire or in their Google Reviews.

Meet in them Face to Face

You should meet your wedding DJ before your wedding. Make sure you click with them and make them understand what you want for your wedding. If you can’t meet in person, a video call is also a really great option for getting to know the DJ and if it is a good fit.

Give the DJ Your Playlist and “Do Not Play” List

DJs often prefer to be left in charge of the playlist so that they can curate the music to match the mood of the room, but your input is important! By letting the DJ know the kind of music that you like can help them know your taste and style and pick out a great playlist for you.   Even more important, don’t be afraid to tell them if there are songs or artists that you don’t like! This will help ensure that you love the music all night long.

Make Sure They Specialize in Weddings

There are so many DJs out there who may not specialize in weddings. Not only is the music at a nightclub completely different from what you hear at a wedding, you want a DJ that can help lead guests through the whole evening. Finding a DJ that specializes in weddings ensures that they know how to make announcements at the right time, have the right gear for the space and can work with your other vendors to make the evening run smoothly.

David’s Bar Mitzvah

Champaign IL Illinois Bar Bat Mitzvah DJ Blog Cover

Recently, my team and I went down to Champaign, IL again (for a second time, on a special request) to DJ and provide entertainment for David’s Bar Mitzvah. Rocking this party with me was DJ FastLane on the turntables, and Dance Motivator Kevin with me on the dance floor while I was the emcee.  David’s family was referred to me by a past client who’s Bar Mitzvah I DJed in Champaign two years earlier. Myself and my team were able to bring the “Chicago” feel and energy to Champaign, which is exactly what David and his family wanted!

David’s family prepared a great video slideshow/montage showing pictures of David growing up, and pictures with all of his friends from OSRUI, his summer camp in Wisconsin. We played some games with the kids/teenagers while the adults were busy with cocktail hour and lunch, and then had some interactive dances we were able to teach to everyone as well!

The party was held at the Stone Creek Events Center in Urbana where Bob, the owner was great to work with. I also had the opportunity to work with Bradley of Bradley Leeb Photography who was really great to work with, and a true professional at what he does.

Please check out the pictures below and feel free to share on social media! Sorry for the low quality, it seems the camera wasn’t setup right before this party.

Kara and Marc’s Wedding

Shelbyville Wedding DJ with Group

Kara and Marc recently tied the knot this past June, where I was able to be their Wedding DJ down in Shelbyville, IL (it’s about 3.5 hours south of Chicago) at Spruce Street Studios. Needless to say, this was my first time working at the venue, which turned out to be a great experience. The staff at Spruce Street Studios were really great to work with, and very accommodating since I was limited to working with them over phone and email exclusively in order to make sure everything was perfect, without the ability to do a venue site walk ahead of time (since it’s so far away).

For this wedding, I (with the assistance of DJ FastLane) provided Wedding DJ services for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. This wedding had a unique set up where the cocktail hour was in the hallway (opposite the DJ setup in the reception hall) and outside. For this, I was able to use a special high-end wireless audio system to transmit the audio from the reception hall to both other locations. This let me easily make announcements throughout the entire venue while keeping music consistent as well!

Kara and Marc’s wedding photographer, Jeff Wagner of J-Wag Photography along with his crew were involved in the entire day, shooting pictures early in the morning all the way through the reception, and even ran the photobooth in the hallway.

Kara and Marc, thanks again for honoring me and letting me be a part of your lives as personal friends, as well as your wedding DJ!

Lindsey and Andrew’s Wedding

Lindsey and Andrew with Paul

Lindsey and Andrew just recently (October 2014) had their fall themed wedding at the Bradley University Hayden-Clark Alumni Center in Peoria, IL. Both Lindsey and Andrew are personal friends of mine, where I knew both before they started dating.

DJ Paul Michaels (with the assistance of DJ FastLane) provided Wedding DJ services for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception including the interactive high powered uplighting!

The fantastic photography for the engagement pictures and day-of photos were all done by Crystal Day Photography.

The ceremony was held on the stairs of the alumni center connecting the first and second floors. Very cool concept to have all of your guests looking upon you from above, since Lindsey, Andrew, and the officiant were all on the landing between the two floors.

One extra special part about this wedding is that the cake was created and designed by the Aunt of the Groom!

Lindsey and Andrew, thanks again for letting me be a part of your wedding from the very beginning (years before we knew you’d be marrying each other!)
