Should You Hire a DJ or Band for Your Wedding?

Choosing the right music is essential to creating a memorable wedding. Meanwhile, the question of whether to hire a DJ or a band for your wedding reception may come up. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. However, there are some things you can consider to direct you to the right decision.

Try to compare the differences between booking a band or hiring a DJ to determine what best fits your wedding. Below are things to consider to help you with your decision.

  • Budget

In many cases, DJs cost less than a wedding band. A band involves a larger group of people, equipment, and instruments, hence the high pay.

If you lean towards a band, that’s fine. However, if you are bothered about the cost, you may decide to go for a DJ’s services. Although some DJs cost as much as live bands, many DJs are less expensive because they are usually a one or two person show.

  • Music Varieties

A DJ is a better option if you want a variety of music styles and genres for your wedding. Wedding bands usually have an agreed-upon song list they can perform. Therefore, if you care about music variety, a DJ may be your likely choice. If you prefer live music with a specific style, a live band may be a better fit.

  • Wedding Venue

Your venue is another thing to consider when making your decision. Bands generally need a lot of space to allow for multiple band members, and large equipment. Ensure the venue is large enough to fit your band. Some venues have restrictions on the number of equipment and musicians to bring in, so check with your venue before you start hiring.

  • You Can Mix Things Up

Some couples hire both DJs and bands for their celebration. If you can afford it, you can have the DJ for the reception and a band or perhaps a Chicago quartet for the wedding ceremony.

6 Creative Ways to Personalize Your Wedding

Your wedding is your day, therefore you can make it unique by personalizing your celebration to fit your personality. From the location you choose, to the wedding theme and wedding games, there are multiple ways to customize your event and make it unique. These are some great ideas to make a statement with your wedding!

  •         Include Meaningful Details

Special details about your life and love story will make your event unique. Is there a song that means a lot to your relationship? Play it! The story of how you met? Share it!

You can get ideas from your passion and hobbies. For example, if you love books, you can have your cake designed as a stack of books; if you love to travel, design your paper goods to look like a passport.

  •         Display Photos

You can include a wall or table or even a slide in the venue where you share photos of you and your partner-or just general pictures. The pictures can be of your family members or even loved ones that have passed.

  •         Personalize Your Menu and Signature Drinks

You can have fun by customizing the cocktails too. Let the bartender prepare a custom drink that has a special meaning to you.

Additionally, your food can be designed around your relationship or your roots and where you’re from. For example, if there is a food you both love to eat or a food significant to your tradition, you could have it served at your wedding reception!

  •         Include Fun Signage

Including signage is an excellent way to add your stamp on the wedding. You can share custom signage about your relationship. There are many ways you can do this: display your favorite quote, customize and add your initials to the favors, write out a part of your vows, personalize the aisle, and more.

  •         Celebrate Your Roots

Celebrate your roots, traditions, and beliefs by showcasing them at your event. For example, if there’s a practice significant to your culture or religion, you can include it in your wedding.

  •         Include Music You Love

Celebrate your day by playing music that you love. It is essential because music, more than anything else, adds life to any celebration!

2 Important Things a Great DJ Excels in Doing

There is more to DJing than just mixing songs or making playlists. It takes more than that to lead your guests through the entire evening smoothly and entertain audiences at weddings and parties. One good quality of a good DJ is not only do they have a wide database of music to choose from but they know which excellent songs to use when detecting the temperament and mood of guests at an event.

A professional DJ is adept at knowing the right place, moment, and mood to play particular songs. The best DJ is one who is creative enough to know his or her audience and the environment they are DJing. So, to be able to find great DJs from the amateurs, we have listed some tips below so you’ll be sure before you secure the services of a DJ for your wedding.

  • Reading the Room

A DJ who knows what they are doing, they can read the room and can play songs that induce particular emotions in the guests. A professional DJ will have years of experience with this, so it’s something he or she can easily do.

  • The Perfect Time to Play the Perfect Songs

A good DJ knows the right time to play certain types of music. The DJ has control and he must make sure he or she exceeds the audience’s expectations. The DJ must know how to read the time and moment to entertain each and everyone at the wedding venue. Exceptional DJs are those that know exactly what to play and when to play it.

5 Top Ways to Engage Your Wedding Guests on The Dance Floor

If you are looking for ways to ensure your wedding guests thoroughly engage themselves at your wedding reception, here are a few very simple tricks to try. These are sure to get all your guests to the dance floor as soon as dance music comes through the DJ’s speakers!

  • Have A Spacious Dance Floor

If you want all your wedding guests having a great time on the dance floor, you will need a dance floor that is sized appropriately for your number of guests. They need enough space to show off their dance moves, of course.

Ensure that you put the size of the dance floor into consideration before choosing a wedding venue. Go for one that is spacious enough to accommodate every couple. Your venue will be able to estimate the correct size of the dance floor for your party.

  • Give your DJ the necessary information about your guests

While preparing your wedding playlist with your wedding DJ, we advise you to give the DJ the information they will need about your guests.

For example, inform them of the number of guests you are inviting, and the age range of the guests-how many teenagers, adults, etc. will be attending. This information will help the DJ arrange the playlist in a way that will entertain everyone in attendance.

  • Get Ready to Dance

Some of your guests might not be too eager to dance but you can change that. Lead by example! Once you set a good example for your wedding guests, we believe they’ll follow suit.

The wedding is all about you and your partner, so all eyes will be on you, which means they’ll be ready to follow if you hit the dance floor first.

One of our tips we give every couple is that your guests want to be wherever you are. They are there to celebrate you. If you’re on the dance floor, your guests will be there with you!

  • Play A Lot of Upbeat Dance Songs

Slow songs are great but when it comes to the dance floor at your wedding reception, dance songs work best, for obvious reasons.

When your wedding DJ plays faster songs at your wedding reception, your guests will be more enticed to get on their feet and dance the night away!

  • Get a professional DJ

A professional wedding DJ simply makes everything easier. When you secure the services of such a professional, you won’t have to worry about the entertainment at your wedding reception. A professional DJ knows how to set the mood at your wedding and make certain your guests have a wonderful time.

Secrets to an Awesome Wedding Dance Floor

One of the best and entertaining parts of a wedding is music and in extension, the dance floor!  An empty or boring dancefloor is a nightmare we’re sure everyone would want to avoid. Below are some suggestions that will help your guests make their way to the dance floor and keep it rocking!

  • Create the Right Mood

It’s essential to set the right mood. The mood for your party is usually set during cocktail hour.  With proper lighting and music, this can enhance your guests’ vibe. When you’re ready to get the dancing part of the night started, work with your DJ to pick an upbeat song to get the wedding started!

  • Timing

Timing is important. You don’t want to stop the dancing because it’s time for speeches, and then expect your guests to all return to the dancefloor with the same vibe. Consider having essential wedding activities completed before dancing starts.

  • Make Sure There’s Enough Space

Small dance floors will discourage your guests and limit their dancing. Therefore, ensure you pick a venue with enough dance floor space. The ideal size is to have 3 square feet of space for every two guests, which means about 200 guests will need 18 x 18 area.

  • Provide Flip Flops for Female Guests

Sore or blistered feet from high heels can obviously kill the vibe for your guests. Consider providing flip flops or socks for female guests to keep them dancing.

  • Hire an Awesome DJ

An excellent wedding DJ will help make a fantastic dance floor. Great DJs can read the crowd and know the songs to play to get people on the dance floor.

They also have an exciting and diverse playlist that will get people excited to be on the dance floor. Want a packed dance floor? Invest in a great DJ!

  • Trust Your DJ

Don’t teach the DJ how to do their work. Let your DJ lead the music services. Song requests are great ideas, but you don’t want to try to turn your DJ into a jukebox playing from the list you provided exactly.

  • Set the Lead

Don’t underestimate how contagious your energy is. Taking the lead to hit the dance floor will encourage the guests to join you. Your guests are there to be with you. If you’re on the dance floor, that’s where your guests will be!

5 Wedding Entertainment Ideas That Will Impress Your Guests

Photo both image

A unique and varied line-up of entertainment options will not only excite your guests but also create a fun atmosphere for your event. While the dance floor may be entertainment for some crowds all night long, adding a few extra touches to entertain the guests can be great additions to your wedding. If you’re looking to surprise and entertain your guests, these 5 ideas will do wonders for you.

  • Photo Booth

Taking photos with your friends is always fun. A photo booth is perfect for having a fun time putting on props and posing with your friends, but it also helps create lasting memories of your wedding for you and your guests.  Because we can print out multiple copies, everyone can take a copy home. At Paul Michaels Events, if you use our DJ services, we give you $200 off of the premium photo booth package. The package comes with a backdrop of your choosing, props and a book of all of the photos taken throughout the night for the new couple to take home (so you can see what your friends and family were up to all night!).

  • Food Fiesta

While food can satisfy and incite the taste buds, it can also be a source of fun. Try to be creative with the food options and the menu. You can serve ‘entertaining’ wedding food like cotton candy, sushi, midnight snacks, chocolates and more. You’d be surprised how much your guests will appreciate this twist!

Also, food trucks have gained quite a momentum in wedding receptions. You can be creative with the food styles and options in a way that excites your guests.

  • Games

Games are always a fun activity and you can bring that fun to your event! Lawn games, casino tables, Jenga, space hopper, musical chairs, bingo, bouncing castle etc. Games are an idea that  both kids and adults can enjoy.

  • Fireworks

A popular option for entertainment is to have a spectacular display of fireworks towards the end of the wedding reception. Think of it as the grand finale that ends the ceremony with a bang. Sparklers also work for a similar effect at a smaller scale!

  • Dance and Choreography

Music helps set the mood at a wedding reception and where there is music, there is dancing and fun. You and your new partner might want to have a choreographed dance, or you could bring back something from the bachelor or bachelorette party.

Dj’ing the Joliet Central HS Homecoming 2019

The party never stops at Joliet Central High School, and that’s exactly what we experienced providing our DJ services for their Homecoming Dance. From the moment we started providing our tasty mashups and tunes, the room became energized, and so did the students….who seemed to stay on the dance floor the entire night.

Once they flooded the dance floor, it quickly became hard to find a spot for anyone else. That didn’t discourage these kids in the slightest, as they just kept packing the dance floor and accumulating their energy to keep the party going all night. This was partially thanks to the super exclusive musical experience these students got to be a part of by having us Dj their dance. Not only did we play their favorite jams, but did them one better: MUSIC VIDEOS! Their faces stared shockingly in amazement once they saw their favorite songs displayed on the big screen. Incredible visual displays and graphics also accompanied these videos on the screen thanks to a professional graphic artist doing live video switching.

Tag on a full overhead live controlled lighting display with the addition of full room up lighting, and you have the ultimate dance party experience. To say these kids were “lit” is merely an understatement. A new word will have to be invented for the amount of energy these kids had that night, which knowing teenagers won’t take long at all.

It was an amazing experience for us to be a part of this special night at Joliet Central High School and we can’t wait to be back to rock the party once again.

Devil’s Ball at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago

Our night providing entertainment services for the Devil’s Ball at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University

We recently rocked out at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago for their annual “Devil’s Ball”. We were so happy to be providing the DJ services for this party. Plus, we brought the photobooth and provided those services as well.

Paul Michaels Events had one of our best veteran DJs, DJ Terry, play the tunes and entertain the crowd. It was a great event, and it seemed like all had a great time while supporting the restoration and preservation of the National Historic Landmark Auditorium Theatre.

The ball provided an impressive silent auction spread, wine auction, gave theater tours, and of course food, drinking, and dancing.  The photobooth services were a big hit as well. It was a family friendly event, so the guest’s ages were all over the spectrum. This made for a very interesting night of music, charity, and fun.

When the dance floor opened, everyone was treated to an interesting variety of music. From disco to modern pop, everyone was there to party. Everything was going great, and then…

…Bam. Surprise belly dancers! These flexible ladies shook things up with some impressive moves and had guests in awe. When their set concluded. we kept the party hopping. The dance floor stayed packed the remainder of the evening. Many didn’t want the party to end, as guests were singing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody as they left the theater. It was truly a night to remember.

Check out the pictures below for a quick recap of the awesome event!

Services Provided by Paul Michaels Events:  Chicago DJ Services, Chicago Photobooth Services

Fenton High School Prom 2019 at the Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows

What a way to wrap up the 2019 Prom Season!

We recently provided our Chicago based DJ services and Photobooth rental services for the Fenton High School Prom at The Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. This party was definitely on point.

The school had chosen “Casino Royale” as their prom’s theme and even had casino games set up in the pre-reception area for the students to play before entering into the reception hall. There were about 400 students in attendance to fill this massive venue.

DJ Marc and DJ Paul Michaels spent the night spinning requests and all of the top songs. The Meadows Club, which has a state of the art sound system, was a perfect spot for a prom. The venue was dressed as sharp as the attendees and looked awesome.  With over 40 uplights setup around the perimeter of the room, the atmosphere had a red glow that perfectly matched the theme of the prom.

We also had some fun with two CO2 blasters on the stage. If you’re not familiar with these party tools, they shoot CO2 into the air and add the perfect amount of excitement to any party. We also had a confetti cannon to spray confetti all over the room (and by all over the room, we mean ALL OVER THE ROOM).

One of the things we love about performing at high school events is that we don’t always know what to expect from the crowd. Most events are filled with individuals who have diverse musical interests, but high school students can sometimes difficult to please…as their musical tastes can be extremely eclectic.  Fortunately for us and the crowds we entertain, we work hard to stay up with the current musical trends. High School functions definitely keep us sharp, and make our jobs interesting and exciting.
